Co-Parenting ABCs: Boyfriends and Child Custody Laws 101

My boyfriend and his ex have a child together, and his ex doesn’t want me around their son. She told my boyfriend that if I’m at his house when the child visits, she’s not going to let him see his son anymore. My boyfriend won’t stand up to her, and now he has to go over to her house whenever he wants to see his son! Is this legal? Can she do this?

Co-Parenting and "The Talk"…Or, Dads Talk About Periods, Too.

A co-parenting dad we know shared the following story with us:

When my ex-wife and I were first separated, I reached out to her to talk about our middle daughter’s development and pending puberty. We have shared custody, with our daughters alternating between our households–a week with me, a week with her. Because of this arrangement, I knew there was a 50-50 chance of our daughter starting her period at my house. My ex had already discussed puberty with her, but I had not been privy to the details of that conversation. I wanted to make sure that my ex and I were on the same page in case I was the “parent on duty” when my daughter’s period started.

I understood that things were still very raw for my ex; I initiated the divorce, and I could have been a better husband to her. However, I saw my relationship with my daughters and my concern for them as separate issues from our marital–and now divorce–issues. So, I was surprised when my ex responded to my inquiry about her previous discussion with our daughter by snapping, “She knows what she needs to know!” and refusing to discuss the matter with me further.
